The Moors and Christians festivals have a great tradition and are very old, since they have been celebrated since the end of the 16th century. They commemorate, recreating in a festive way, the confrontation that took place between Muslim and Christian troops during the 13th century for control of the territory of Spain.


ALCOY: THE MOORS AND CHRISTIANS FESTIVAL

We are going to visit ALCOY - a city where the famous international festivals are celebrated - The Moors and Christians festival.

The Moors and Christians festivals have a great tradition and are very old, they have been celebrated since the end of the 16th century. They commemorate, recreating in a festive way, the confrontation that took place between Muslim and Christian troops during the 13th century for control of the territory of Spain.

The beginning of the festivities is a true spectacle that is worth attending: the entry of the two armies into the city. From the early hours of the morning, the streets, balconies and windows are filled with people prepared not to miss a single detail. To the sound of music and with all pageantry and majesty, the different groups that make up the Moorish side and the Christian side will parade, wearing luxurious attire and competing in sumptuousness. It is usually one of the most brilliant and massive acts, in some cases, as in Alcoy, more than 5,000 people parade.

Various events are held in honor of Saint George and the great battle is recreated in the castle installed in the Plaza de España, which is a symbol of the city.

Day plan:

- We leave early in the morning and travel to Alcoy
- From 10:30 a.m. the parade of the entrance of the Cirstian side begins
- Break for lunch
- From 5:00 p.m. the parade of the entrance of the Moro side begins
- Return to Valencia for dinner time

It is a day full of spectacle, tradition, imagination and history. It is worth living it at least once in a lifetime!
