After that, Barcelona was reconstructed in the third century before Jesus Christ, by Cartago Amílcar Barca, the father of Aníbal. In honor of his big Carthaginian family, he named the city “Barsino”.
According to the other legend, the city was found by the same Amílcar Barcar after 133 before Christus, when the romans did conquer the city Ibérica de Laie.
- In the Observatory Fabra in 1921 the Spaniard José Comas Solá discovered the asteroid (945) Barcelona, which received its name in honor of the native city of the astronomer who discovered it.
- The construction of the cathedral Sagrada Familia of Barcelona, which began during the life of Gaudi in 1882, didn’t finish yet and its termination is just foreseen for the year 2026.

A little history of the city:
Zaragoza's history dates back to more than 2000 years and has many vestiges of the past periods. Already inhabited in the Bronze Age, its origin is Iberian, dates from the third century B.C., and throughout the centuries Romans and Muslims have settled in it, and almost the totality of the civilizations that have occupied the Iberian Peninsula.
It was the capital of the kingdom of Aragon (by joining the Kingdom of Castilla it gave the origin to the current Spain) and the headquarter where all the kings of the Crown of Aragon were crowned for hundreds of years.

Today Zaragoza is the fifth largest city in Spain in terms of number of inhabitants and it combines modernity, tradition and history with elegance and pride. It is situated on the riverbank of the Ebro, the largest river in Spain, whose waters reflect the beauty of its two cathedrals (the “Catedral-Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza”, and the “Catedral del Salvador de Zaragoza”) and of the city. Mudejar set is a World Heritage Site, the impressive Basilica of Pilar houses frescoes of one of our most famous and renowned painters: Goya, and Plaza de la Hispanidad is a place which immortalizes many pictures. It will be a very special day!

Zaragoza, Basilica del Pilar, la Seo, Catedral del Salvador, Plaza de la hispanidad, Palacio de al Aljaferia, Casa del Deán y Arco del Deán, Torreón de la Zuda, Puente de Piedra, Puente del Tercer Milenio

You will be impressed by the Basilica del Pillar, imbedded in a huge and wonderful place with the same name. It’s style is baroque and the Marian temple is the most ancient one of Spain and potentially of all the world. In its inside we can see---- de Goya, as of the era of his youth, as well as of his middle age.  The basilica is dedicated to the virgin of Pillar, which is the patron of Spain. Actually the 12th of October is the day of the Hispanidad (the day Colon arrived in America) and the same day we dedicate to the virgin of Pillar. Note this day in your agenda because this is public holiday in all Spain (you won’t have clases this day). The tradition says that the virgin was presented to the apostle Santiago who was preached in these lands. The virgin, next to a pillar, begged him to build a church at the same place. The first notes of this church are from the IV before Christos.
Nowadays the basilicas are pillars and above them there is a figure of the virgin, which will surprise you with her height: just 38cm!
His cape nearly covers the whole pillar. In Spain there exists the tradition that the parents take their children to Zaragoza, to the basilica, pass by the coat of the virgin to be protected.  This basilica is a symbol of Spain. Nearly all Spanish inhabitants already have been to Zaragoza when they were young.

In the walk we are going to admire several Moorish monuments which will not leave you indifferent because some are World Heritage. The art is the medieval Moorish architectural style fruit of Christian and Muslim coexistence in the Iberian Peninsula, so it is likely that this is the first time you get know him. You'd be amazed! For example the beautiful Palace of the Aljafería. Built in the eleventh century by Muslims, passed into Christian hands in the twelfth century, when it was completed with the Moorish style and housed the majestic throne room of the kings of the Crown of Aragon. Today this palace is the headquarter of the government of Aragon. Other Moorish buildings are the Catedral del Salvador (la Seo), which harmonically combines the Gothic and Moorish style, the House and the Arch of the Dean (la Casa y el Arco del Deán), the tower of the Zuda (el torreón de la Zuda), and more ...

The city borders the large Ebro River. Usually the rivers in Spain are not very large, so the Spanish people are always impressed by how wide and majestic this river is. Several bridges cross the Ebro River, like the Stone Bridge (Puente de Piedra), of the fifteenth century with seven beautiful arches, and the current and modern Third Millennium Bridge (Puente del Tercer Milenio), which connects with the most futuristic part of the city.

During the day we can enjoy the wonderful gastronomy of Aragon. If you like getting to know new kind of food and gastronomy you have the possibility to taste the “Jamón de las cercanas sierras de Teruel” and try a endless types of Tapas, which not are usual for Valencia, like Las migas, el ternasco (one of the best meat of the lamb), el chilindrón ( a tasteful sauce of tomatoes and paprika, as an attachment to chicken). The products of the pig, like the backplate or the pork sausage, are typical for this area, but if you don’t like meat you also can try codfish, which is also a typical and delicious plate. The local wine does have local denominations.  So it might be a good idea to take some back to Valencia as a souvenir.

What are the typical memorizations everybody buys when visiting Zaragoza? For the Catholics it’s the medals and pendants of the virgin of Pillar. For those who have a sweet tooth, there are giants’ bonbons and sweets of diverse sizes. Some can weight about 500g. They are packed inside a paper of the Virgin of Pillar and inside there are written the letter of a “Jota” (a typical aragonite song, which also can be danced). An example:

“Cuando oyes cantar la jota
y estás lejos de Aragón
es un dardo que penetra
dulcemente en el corazón”.
