Vineyards: Utiél-Requena

Wine tasting and visit to one of the best wine cellars in the Valencian Community!

Wine tasting and tour of one of the best wine cellars in the Valencian Community and a trip to the historical centre of the Requena city and its undergroung caves.
We'll leave early in the morning to make the most of the day and we'll come back in the afternoon.

The Utiel-Requena area is in our province and around 100km away from Valencia. In this area the dry climate and beautiful countryside make the best wines and cold meats in Valencia. You wont eat or drink anywhere better than here!
The natural expanse dominates the area and it's nearly all forests and trees or vineyards for wine making with the odd village her and there. It's a very rural zone that you have to see for yourself!
There is evidence that they have been making wine here for over 2,500 years and this is the perfect terrain for producing a grape of unbeatable quaility. The varieties that are found here are the bobal, Merseguera, and Maccabee. The wines that are made are the best in the world. We're not exaggerating, but you can come and see for yourself!

Despite the fact that the wines from Utiel-Requena are among the best in the world and they win prizes and awards, they are unjustly not famous on a world level. Although, their quality and excellence has started to be noticed on an international scale, and the production of these wines is not only for national consumption with more international exports every year. These wines could definitely compete with the others such as those with the Rioja certificate of origen or those from Ribera del Duero. In fact, many wines from Rijoa are made with the excellent grape from Utiel-Requena.

After an unforgettable journey through the mountains, forests and vineyards we will arrive at the wine cellar. The tour will start with a visit to the past where we will discover how our ancestors made the wine, which is the basis upon which they still make it today. In Utiel-Requena they have mixed the artisan and traditional methods with newer innovative technology. The wines are perfected by each step of the wine making proccess. In fact, the majority of the wines are ecological as they are still cultivated in the same was as during the antiquity.

A guide will accompany us throughout our visit
to explain each step of the wine making process from the vineyards and the wine harvest, to treading the grapes and the fermentation and aging it in barrels. We'll discover all the secrets of wine, and this mysterious process that makes a grape, such a heady exceptional and delicious drink. The wine is very much ours, and very Spanish; it is immersed in our culture, as shown in the song "Long live the wine and women" (Viva el vino y las mujeres)  by the folk singer Manolo Escobar.

We will see the vineyards and how they make the wine nowadays, we'll visit the more modern factory equipment and see the heart of the wine cellar, the barrell room, were we'll be told how different types of wine are made. And of course we will have a WINE TASTING. We'll be taught the difference between the taste and aromas of each wine to be able to appreciate the different types.

After the visit to the wine cellar we'll go to the city Requena to eat in the bars and restaurants in the old town. We reccomend that you try the cold meats! Like the wine the cold meats of Utiel-Requena have certificate of origen. They are the best in Spain!

After eating we'll go to Villa, (the old town) where we'll see the monuments of the area. Requena has a rich extensive history which can be seen through its archaelogical remains. Historically it was a defense city and has always stood out for its artisan commerce and agriculture. Even in the nineteenth century it became the center of Oenology of Valencia and it was here that the first wine making school of Spain was founded.
Today Requena is a modern city, despite being in a natural and rural environment. But the old town, Villa is very well preserved and maintains the charm and atmosphere of the old villa. We will see the Palace of Cid and Gothic churches of Santa Maria and San Nicolas and El Salvador.

Whenwe wander through Villa, you will not begin to imagine what lies beneath your feet. Under all the narrow and steep streets, there is a whole world and labyrinth underground in the form of caves! These caves are located below the old town. Dating from the Muslim period (9th-13th centuries) they had several uses such as food preservation, cellars, pantries and even shelter. This trip will surprise anyone who visits the caves. you'll be impressed by how deep they are, and they travel throughout the city below! They form a kind of labyrinth with wonderful nooks, andan impressive silence. Its beauty and originality will not leave you indifferent. It's an underground world that will amaze you.
